Part of living this healthy life is by having a weight that is classified as healthy. When it comes to calculating whether somebody has such a thing, BMI is used – which stands for “body mass index”.
When it comes to BMI, is a BMI of 24 a good result? Is it healthy?
The short answer is: yes. A healthy weight for somebody is considered to be 24 BMI or less. Anything above is considered to be various levels of overweight.

What Is BMI?
As we’ve touched upon, BMI stands for “body mass index”.
BMI is a tool used by doctors to calculate how healthy somebody is in terms of weight, or rather how much body fat they have.
It does this by measuring the ratio of your weight and height.
To do this, your weight is measured by kilograms and your height is measured in meters squared. This means that if you have a BMI of 23, then it’s listed as 23kg/m2.
The Different Weight Types Of BMI
When a person has their BMI calculated using the above formula, the result is then measured against different ranges of BMI figures in order to tell whether the person’s weight is healthy or not.
There are four different categories.
The first category lists BMI figures that suggest the person’s weight is actually “underweight”. For people to fall into this category, they have a BMI that is either 18.5 or less.
In these cases, it’s best for the person to put on a little more weight to be healthy, and fit into the next category.
That next category is known as “healthy”. For a person to fit into this, their BMI is anywhere between 18.5 and 24.9.
This is undoubtedly the best category to be in and the only category that should be aimed for to have a healthy lifestyle.
The focus of this article, 24 BMI, fits into this category – we’ll go into that a bit later on.
The next category is for people who are considered to be “overweight”. To fit into this category, the BMI will be 25 and above, going up to 29.9.
It’s not ideal to be in this category. If you want to be healthy, then it’s a good idea to lose weight so that your BMI fits into the “healthy” category below.
The fourth and final category for BMI is for people who are classified as “obese”. If somebody has a BMI anywhere between 30 and 39.9, then they fit into this category.
This category is definitely unhealthy to be in and can be dangerous.
Is 24 BMI Good?
This means that a BMI of 24, the focus of this article, is healthy. It fits into the “healthy” category, which contains BMIs anywhere between 18.5 and 24.9.
However, it’s the top end of that healthy BMI level, so be sure not to push it up just a little into the next bracket if you want to remain at a healthy weight and amount of body fat.
What Is A Typical BMI?
You might be looking at these different categories and wondering what a typical BMI is considered to be.
In the United States, the average adult male will usually have a BMI of 26.6. As you can tell, this is a little into the “overweight category”.
As for the average American adult woman, they have a BMI of 26.5, just slightly lower. This is also in the “overweight” category.
Neither of these are ideal, unfortunately. When it comes to adults, the ideal BMI to have is anywhere between 18.5 and 24.9.
Any more is considered various degrees of overweight, while any less would be undesirably underweight.
How Is BMI For Children Different To Adults?
When it comes to calculating the BMI for children, other factors are also used on top of the height and weight. In addition to those, the age is also considered, as well as their sex.
These elements are all combined to get a more accurate reading BMI for children and young people between the ages of 2 and 18.
How Accurate Is BMI As A Tool?
Technically, the BMI figure is not entirely accurate and helpful when taken on its own. It isn’t a flawless measure of your overall health.
That isn’t to say it isn’t very useful though. However, doctors will use the BMI alongside other factors and measurements, in order to get a better overall view.
It may also seem misleading when it comes to muscular people. Muscle is denser than fat, which means that very muscual people may have an “obese” BMI despite being very healthy.
BMI doesn’t know the difference between fat and muscle.
Additionally, older adults may have too much fat but still maintain a healthy BMI. This is because older adults often have more fat.
If your BMI is underweight then you might be at risk for: anemia, malnutrition, infertility, osteoporosis, and the possibility of a weakened immune system that won’t protect you so well.
If you BMI is overweight, you’re at risk for: gallstones, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, some cancers, depression, and more.
Additionally, black and ethnic minorities are at a greater risk of type 2 diabetes if their BMI is 23 or more.
