Inline skating burns as much body fat and calories as treadmill running, stepping or rowing - but it is arguably much more fun. It provides a cardiovascular workout comparable to running, without stressing the joints. Inline skating tones and strengthens the lower body and torso, including the calves, thighs, butt (glutes, quads) and to a lesser degree the stomach (abs).

30 minutes burns about 170-240 calories. [This is based on a 150-pound woman. If you weigh more, you’ll burn extra calories; if you weigh less, you’ll burn fewer calories.]

How Often Should I Skate For Optimum Weight Loss?

Skate for 20 minutes, alternating between 10 slow and 10 fast strides.

Skate for 40 minutes, alternating between 10 slow, 10 fast strides, 20 fast strides and 20 slow strides.

Skate for 60 minutes using shorter and fast strides combined.

How To Start Inline Skating

Learn the basic movements – for example braking is important and difficult for some people to learn. Consider signing up for a course to learn the proper techniques, it may save you a lot of bruises. Find a smooth surface with no traffic to practice, maybe an empty parking lot. Many people who ice skate, find the transition to inline skating relatively easy.
