What Are Butt Muscles?

The gluteal muscles, more commonly called the butt muscles, are a group of three muscles. This includes the small, medium and large muscles that form the buttocks. The biggest muscle in this group is called the gluteus maximus.

Gluteus Maximus, Medius, Minimus Muscles

The gluteus maxiumus is the large butt muscle that spans our rear end. This area is sometimes called the "glutes". The gluteus maxiumus helps straighten the leg behind us, and helps us to stand up from a sitting position. The main function of the gluteus medius (located above the gluteus maximus) and the glutus minimus (below the gluteus maxiumus) is to keep the pelvis steady. We use these butt muscles when we walk up slopes, climb stairs or stand from a sitting position.

Butt Shape and Fat

Fat location, especially lower body fat, is affected by gender. Women typically accumulate fat in the butt and thigh area (at least until menopause) while men accumulate more fat in the abdominal area.

What To Do to Reduce Lower Body Fat

If you are overweight, you need to combine your butt exercises with a healthy, lower-calorie diet. Exercise helps to tone the muscles and make the area appear leaner, but only a calorie-controlled diet reduces excess fat.
