What is a Stability Ball?

Used for many years in physical rehabilitation clinics, stability balls (also called Swiss exercise balls) are now used by fitness trainers, group fitness classes and in home exercise videos as a versatile and economical piece of training equipment to raise core fitness, as well as muscle strength and flexibility.

Fitness Routines with Stability Ball

Stability exercise balls can be used in place of a bench while doing traditional strength exercises. The dynamic instability of the ball obliges the athlete to use the core muscles of the midsection (ab muscles, like rectus abdominus, transverse abdominus, external and internal obliques; thigh and quadriceps muscles, back muscles like lats) to maintain body balance.

According to the American Council on Exercise (ACE), the core strength of the body is important because the muscles of the lower back and abdomen serve as a solid foundation for day-to-day physical movement and activities, as well as body posture.

Using Stability Exercise Balls

According to fitness experts, when sitting on the ball, your thighs should be parallel to the floor. Most brands of stability exercise balls come in several sizes, and as a rule of thumb, adults 5' to 5'6" tall should use a 55 centimeter ball, while those 5'7" and over should use a 65 centimeter ball. Parents intending to buy a stability ball for their child should consult with a trained fitness professional to ensure the ball is the right size for safe exercise workouts.

Stability Ball and Weight Control

Stability Balls improve health and fitness, build muscle tissue, and develop a leaner body shape. They also help to raise metabolism and may also help to develop a flat stomach. To lose fat tissue, and reduce weight, workouts using Stability Balls need to be combined with a calorie-controlled diet. Because unless you create a calorie deficit, you can't burn fat and therefore lose weight.
