Fat Calories
Fat calories are different
from carboydrate-calories and protein-calories.
- To begin with each gram
of fat contains 9 calories, while carbs and protein contain only 4 calories
per gram.
- In addition the way our
body metabolizes dietary fat is different from the way it processes
carbs or protein. This is because dietary fat is very similar in chemical
composition to our regular body fat, so it takes less energy to convert
this diet fat into body fat.
- For example, only about
3 per cent of the fat-calories we eat are used to convert that food
into body fat. By comparision about 25 per cent of the carb or protein
calories we eat are used to convert these foods into body fat. This
means that reducing our fat calories should have a direct impact on
a calorie intake and satiety.
