Basal Metabolic RateWhat is Basal Metabolic Rate?Basal Metabolic Rate is the number of calories you need daily for your body to carry out basic involuntary functions, like breathing and cell-repair. Put simply, basal metabolic rate is an estimate of how many calories you would burn if you were to lie in bed asleep for 24 hours, with measurement beginning 12 hours after your last meal to ensure that your digestive system was inactive and not burning calories digesting food. This basic rate of calories burned is the result of many factors including, gender, age, height, muscle-fat ratio, fitness, hormones and so on. Some people naturally have a higher metabolic rate than others. How to Raise Metabolic Rate and Burn More CaloriesCertain factors which determine your basal metabolic rate (and thus your basic calorie needs) can't be changed. These include physiological factors (height/weight etc) and genetic factors. But you can do at least two things to raise your metabolic rate and burn more calories. (1) Increase the amount of physical exercise you perform. (2) Increase the amount of lean tissue (muscle) your body contains by doing more fitness workouts with weights. |
